What is Bill 25?

Bill 25 is a regulation that updates legal provisions relating to personal data security and will influence various aspects of the web world. It represents the Quebec adaptation of Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), itself inspired by the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The main aim of this regulation is to guarantee the confidentiality of personal data. It is due to come into force on September 22, 2023.

Its main areas of impact include the following:

  1. Technological tools for website creation and management The technologies you can use to create and manage websites.
  2. Managing the storage of user and customer data and personal information The way you manage the storage of your users' and customers' personal data and information.
  3. Your company's current and future legal obligations and organizational responsibilities The legal requirements and organizational responsibilities currently incumbent on your company, and which may change in the future.

For an in-depth understanding, we recommend that you consult the resources provided by the Quebec government as well as those offered by Commission d'accès à l'information du Québecwhich summarize your future obligations.

It is therefore of the utmost importance to comply with this law to avoid significant financial penalties, up to 10,000$.
